I'm a louver not a fighter
By Tim Lentz, 2009-08-11 13:27:06

This is a photo that is being uploaded by request. Our former Architectural Site Coordinator, Andy Temeyer, told me that I should include this photo about a month ago. Finally, Andy's long wait is over. These shade louvers can be slide over the window in the summer months to prevent unwanted solar heat gain through the window. This will reduce the load on the air conditioner, saving energy. We are also hoping to attach thin film photovoltaic modules onto the outer faces of the louvers to get some extra electrical production as well. This louver is on the east side of the house and similar ones will be used on the south side.
Boot Cut Insulation
By Tim Lentz, 2009-08-03 11:38:36

Hello everyone, sorry about not posting anything in a long time. The project pace has been continually picking up and I've been spending more time on the construction site than at a computer. After a brief absence, Solar Decathlon is back on the ISU homepage, this time as the main picture. If you want to check it out go to www.iastate.edu We'll be the ones with solar panels.
Anyhow, this picture shows one of our insulation layers in the walls. This insulation is made out of recycled blue jeans. We've also attached the jean insulation to the ceiling too. It's a nice reuse of materials that also helps to cut energy bills. This picture is pretty dated because most of the blue jean insulation is now covered by drywall but I wanted to include it in the journal so that people can still see it. Enjoy. I'll try to post again soon.

PV Racks In Progress
By Tim Lentz, 2009-07-21 15:35:36

We received the UniRac mounting rails for the PV modules last week and yesterday we started to mount them on the roof. They still aren't all attached because the task took most of the day and it rained this morning. Hopefully, we'll finish mounting the racks tomorrow. Once the racks are attached, the PV modules can be secured using a simple clamp and screw system. This will help save some time when we have to remount the panels in Washington DC.
Gimme Shelter
By Tim Lentz, 2009-07-21 15:26:39

Aaron is constantly fixing the shelter constructed next to the tool shed. Here we see him "fixing" it once and for all. I hope it doesn't rain during the next on-site meeting.
